'Her heart was bigger than this room' | Community Spirit

Hundreds of friends and family members gathered Sunday to remember a young girl who was killed in a 15-vehicle pileup on Interstate 90.

Rachel Beckwith was taken off life support on Saturday, and although she was just 9 years old, she left a lasting legacy.

"Rachel was a very special girl. I love you very much Rachel and I miss you," her father said. "Her heart was bigger than this room. She always gave whatever she had and would continue to give more."

Rachel always wanted to help others before the crash and had set out to raise $300 for Charity Water to help pay for clean water in developing countries.

Since the crash, more than $100,000 has been donated to the group in Rachel's name.

At the memorial service at Eastlake Community Church in Bothell, Rachel was described as being full of joy, radiating life and a person who touched everyone she encountered.

"The fact that it's an innocent, beautiful 9-year-old girl who was so selfless is just... it's heartbreaking," said Diandra Davies-Uttech, a family friend.

Rachel was riding in the back of a car on I-90 on Wednesday that was one of 13 vehicles hit when a semi-truck driver slammed into a logging truck, causing a chain reaction crash.

The impact caused massive injuries to Rachel's head and spinal cord. Her family said their final goodbyes at Harborview Medical Center on Saturday.

Her friends and family take comfort knowing that Rachel's memory will live on through her legacy of giving.

In addition to her clean water campaign, Rachel's father said his daughter's liver and kidney were donated to help others.
